Just a few things that should send up a yellow flag for you.
1. If your name is used more than once within the body of the email, its probably a form letter and your name was inserted in the marked spaces
2. If the writing seems jibberish, i.e., incomplete sentences or the letter sounds as if the person probably does not have a good command of the English language (can't conjugate a verb), yet the profile states they are from, say, Wisconsin

3. If the person has more than one profile online with the same pic, but different ages and/or geographical locations
4. If you read comments other users have written and they all sound as if the person in question had a "serious connection" with them
5. If you ask obvious questions such as "what do you do work wise" and the person never answers the email but never answers the question
6. If the person sends emails talking about everything under the sun, their likes or dislikes sexually but never says a word about day to day routines
7. If your are the least bit suspicious or have the ole gut feeling, there is no harm in doing some checking. Chances are they use the same screen name in various spots
