Just an idiotic curiosity....why some women call themselves lesbians when they are in a relationship with men? These women either have boyfriends or married with children. I never like the word lesbian for some reason but i am a lesbian and i never been with a man. All my lovers (i like calling them) were straight and bisexual women. All of them are now married with children (yeah, i was like a sx professor, once they graduate they go and get married)

Discussion still open... Lesbian means homosexual woman; homosexual means sexually attracted to member of the SAME sex. Bisexual means sexually attracted to both men and women. I think some women either don't know the REAL definitons of each words or just don't know how to describe themselves. And i don't think its labeling. No matter what we have to call it something. When they found the skeletal remains of a female hominid (3 million yrs old), they called her Lucy. When we go to ice cream parlor, we can't just say "i want to buy an icecream", the attendant will ask you "what kind". When a friend just had a baby, we usually ask "is it a boy or a girl?". When they found a female skeleton and don't know who she was they called her "Jane Doe", and if its a man its "John Doe". As i have mentioned i don't like the word "lesbian" but when i meet women or a woman i let them/her know right away that "i like women" and if they don't understand that then i got no choice but to use the word "lesbian". And if these women still don't get it, then i got no clue which planet they are from.

Historians have re-examined relationships between women in history, and have questioned what qualifies a woman or a relationship as lesbian. The result of such discussion has introduced three components to identifying lesbians: sexual behavior, sexual desire, or sexual identity. Some appear simultaneously intrigued and threatened by women who challenge feminine gender roles, and fascinated and appalled with women who are romantically involved with other women. However you want to paraphrase it, the attraction, desire or as some choose to label it, the homosexuality of one female to another has only the boundaries, YOU place on it. I enjoy FEMALES..it turns me ON..I don't need society or anyone to tell me if it's acceptable. I am not ashamed to admit it. WE are a distinct entity..wink

I agree. 'Lesbian' is a masculine term. Yes lesbian means gay, gay means happy Lesbian means the same but to put it blunt does put a label on us. I am bisexual woman, and yes it took years for me to say the word lesbian as I used to be as I felt it was labelling me like Nazi or labeled like a product in a shop. I'm better than that

Meaning of lesbian= woman who loves & is attracted to women not men. The answer(s) to your question/ querie is women call themselves lesbian sometimes when they are not in the mood for a relationship with a man as they may be stressed. Some women call themselves lesbian but are bisexual, some feel that being bisexual is not an option- insecurity makes them sound/ feel that they are unsure

I believe only in our country our forefathers or who ever the %^(* have to put labels on everything. I think people are capable of loving everything. I think compartmentalizing started when the churches of Europe separated off from one another, like protestants, catholics, ETC, from paranoid men who were afraid of their lords. Damn did that just come out? Ha, Ha, ha, compassion Victoria, compassion Victoria, compassion.

I don't really have respect for the churches who destroyed the many tribes in North America in the 1500's. I believe that its the same people who compartmentalized people also labeled different people or their differances.

when sexual urge takes over and you get warm in the ears at the sight of a woman that marks your desire that is evident you are a lesbian. I love this word as it has penetration and stimulation trapped like a hostage, and with a partner soft or tough, depends, would get released.

That doesn't mean that I hate men because I don't but I will never have a sexual relationship with one again. Only a woman can understand how another woman feels and there is nothing better than feeling another woman's body next to mine. Yes, I have been married twice, had 6 kids and don't regret my children at all but I sure wished I'd figured out what was wrong with my relationships a lot younger. I would have missed a lot of pain in life. My second lover recently died and I have been very emotional over it even though we hadn't been together in years, we were still best friends. Next, I broke up with my third lover and so now I am alone again. It is so hard to meet someone new, even our local gay bar is all couples. But I will remain true to myself and my lesbian nature and wait for that new someone to come along.

There are books about that? Mama Mia!! well, after i finish the poetry books, lesbian books are next. Thank you. I have been gay all my life, had many lovers and mostly long term. My close friends are men and they are pretty cool. Yap! women are pretty much the topic all the time. But still...whether i am out or not, i find it hard to live as a lesbian, its complicated. I am sorry to hear about your lover. I broke up with mine 2 years ago. She was my life. She had problem committing with me, i guess she couldn't say "Mama, Papa, i'm marrying a lesbian". But we're bestfriends now. First time in my life i am alone and i kinda like it. I don't go to gay bars, i got no gay friends and yes, i am on online dating, only way for me to keep in touch with my own people. Finding someone honest, simple, not into cyber sex, loyal, and loving is very hard to find. ITS A JUNGLE OUT THERE! I am sure you will find your princess. For the meantime, lets cast our fishing rods, sit back, have a beer or wine and wait till we get a bite.

Lesbian is a more of a political term, as opposed to words such as being "gay". It's like putting your foot down to homopobia, standing tall and stating that you know who you are, and that you're ok too. So, it's a term we have fought for and have taken back over many years of work. When we talk of PRIDE, I'm proud to be a Lesbian.

I agree, I dont like the word lesbian too. It is too masculine. It is like label. No offence but its like a jew being marked with a star by a Nazi. It is that racist and cruel to me. For that I refuse to be named a lesbian. I'm a woman, I like women, and that is that. It doesnt need a label or adjective. *have I exaggerated a little?*

i hate that we try to compartmentalize everyone. lesbian, butch, experimental bi sexual, the truth of the matter is we are all different. Our sexuality runs along a spectrum and what feels natural to refer to yourself as should be what defines you. not the large book of labels. accept everyone for what they are not what label is above their head whether lesbian, gay, bi, drag, or straight. be proud but don't try to define.

I so agree - if you have pride and your sexuality is truly heartfelt then no offense should ever arise from the word "LESBIAN". For myself it was something i grew into. My comfort level with the term came thru many relationships, age, and wisdom. Be loud and proud about your lifestyle, I find that in many instances i am the first lesbian many of my friends/coworkers have known and my outward approach has inadvertently given our cause added support and love from the hetero world.
