I have always tried to maintain a cordial relationship with my Ex's but my last relationship ended in getting restraining orders. I dont think there is anything wrong in being friends. I find it rather ironic that two people who at one point of time were in love cant even be friends. Just because people are go diffrent directions does not mean that they have to forget what got them together in the first place. The foundation of any relationship is friendship, that should never be lost. Each person we meet enriches our lives in one way or the other, forgetting that is rather ironic.

Any serious relationship requires that you eventually move on past your ex's... If you have a kid, or a real platonic relationship, that's different. But if you still have any feelings for your ex, and you are really into new person, then you need to leave the failed relationships in the past. Otherwise, you never really give the new relationship a chance.
